A dental emergency is any situation involving severe pain, bleeding, swelling, or damage that requires prompt professional attention. Common examples include knocked-out or broken teeth, abscesses, lost crowns or fillings that cause discomfort, and injuries to soft tissue inside the mouth. When in doubt, call your nearest Comfort Dental location and describe your symptoms; our teams can help you determine how urgently you need to be seen.
Yes. Comfort Dental welcomes walk-ins for emergency dentistry at most locations, and we do our best to see patients the same day. Many locations also offer extended weekday hours and Saturday appointments to make urgent care as accessible as possible.
We regularly serve patients as a no insurance dentist and are committed to being a budget dentist option for those who need it. Our teams will walk you through the cost of treatment before any work begins and help you explore payment options that fit your situation. Lack of insurance should never be a reason to delay care for a dental emergency. Explore our discount plan for other options.
For most dental emergencies, a dentist is the right choice. Emergency rooms can address pain management and swelling, but they are generally not equipped to treat dental issues directly. However, if you are experiencing facial trauma, broken bones, difficulty breathing or swallowing, or bleeding that will not stop, go to the nearest emergency room right away and follow up with a dentist afterward.
While you are on your way to see us, you can rinse with warm salt water, apply a cold compress to the outside of your face to reduce swelling, and take an over-the-counter pain reliever as directed on the label. Avoid placing aspirin directly on the gum or tooth, as this can irritate the tissue. These steps can help take the edge off, but they are not a substitute for professional emergency dentistry care.
Knowing how to manage a dental emergency before you reach our office can make a meaningful difference in your outcome. Here are a few quick steps for some of the most common situations.
Step 1
Rinse with warm water, apply a cold compress, and save any fragments to bring with you.
Step 2
Handle it by the crown, rinse gently, and place it back in the socket or keep it in milk or saliva.
Step 3
Rinse with warm water and floss gently. Over-the-counter pain relief is fine — never put aspirin on the gum.
Step 4
Rinse with warm salt water. Don’t try to drain it yourself — get seen as soon as possible.
Extended Hours & Saturday Appointments
Do not wait out a dental emergency and hope it gets better. Pain, infection, and damage tend to worsen over time, and early treatment almost always leads to better outcomes.
