Why Dr. Vetowich Wants You to Finally Make That Appointment
If you've been putting off a dental visit because you're embarrassed about the state of your teeth, you're not alone. It's one of the most common reasons people avoid the dentist, and it's something Dr. Michael Vetowich hears all the time at Comfort Dental in Lafayette. "I'm not here to make judgments," he says. "I'm here to try and help you. Please don't worry about where you're at. Let's try and find a way to help you moving forward." That one sentence captures something essential about the experience patients have at this office. Whether it's been six months or six years since your last visit, the team here isn't keeping score. When Embarrassment Keeps People Away
Dental shame is real. People delay care because they're worried about being lectured, judged, or made to feel bad about their choices. And the longer they wait, the worse that anxiety tends to get. It becomes a cycle that's hard to break. Dr. Vetowich has seen it play out countless times. New patients walk in bracing for criticism and instead find someone who has, in his own words, "seen it all." His response to a patient who apologizes for the condition of their mouth is always the same: let's focus on where we're going, not where you've been. That approach isn't just bedside manner. It reflects a genuine belief that the dentist's job is to reduce suffering, not add to it.A Practice Built Around Compassion
Dr. Vetowich has been practicing dentistry for over 30 years, the last two-plus decades with Comfort Dental in Lafayette. He describes his ideal patient experience as one rooted in dignity. When asked to finish the sentence "every patient deserves," his answer was immediate: dignity. That shows up in the way his team operates. He describes the office culture as light-hearted and fun, with a staff that builds real relationships with patients. "They're fun. I like when they laugh. A couple of them have very distinctive laughs and I like when the office is filled with that," he said. For patients who are nervous or who haven't been in for a while, that atmosphere makes a difference. Walking into a place that feels welcoming rather than clinical can change the entire experience. What to Expect on Your First Visit
Dr. Vetowich emphasizes that the first visit is really about understanding what a patient needs and what they're ready for. The initial conversation matters a lot. "Usually if they're in severe pain, they just want to be out of pain," he noted. "So you've got to figure out what's the easiest, simplest way for me to get them out of pain." From there, the team works with each patient individually. There's no pressure, no overwhelming list of things that need to be done immediately. The goal is to meet people where they are and build from there. Patients also often express surprise at how efficient the process is. Getting something done faster than expected is one of the most common reactions he hears from new patients.Take the First Step
