What Brings a Dentist to the Colorado Foothills?
Dr. Sean Van Tuyl didn't take a straight path to dentistry. He graduated from dental school at 39 after working in a range of fields, spent time practicing in Georgia, and eventually made his way to Evergreen, Colorado, a place that suits him well. These days, when he's not at the office, you'll find him hiking the red rock terrain of eastern Utah and western Colorado, or exploring the green space near his home. "Since I moved out west, I travel a lot around here," he says. "Hiking around out there — that makes me smile." That same sense of groundedness shows up in how Dr. Van Tuyl practices dentistry. Now in his 21st year, he brings a calm, experienced presence to the chair, the kind that comes from having done a lot of things before settling into something he genuinely loves. What Makes His Approach to Patient Care Different?
Dr. Van Tuyl's pre-dental career gave him a practical lens on patient relationships. He's not interested in rushing through appointments or overwhelming people with information they didn't ask for. What he wants, more than anything, is for patients to feel heard. "I would hope that they would say a good listener and somebody who really explains the treatment well — gets them on board with what needs to be done and what the options are," he says. "The empathy and compassion — if you don't have that, then you probably are in the wrong profession." He's also upfront about the fact that not seeing a dentist for years isn't a moral failing. People get busy. Life happens. His job is to meet patients where they are. What Procedures Does Dr. Van Tuyl Specialize In?
While Dr. Van Tuyl handles the full range of general dentistry, he has a particular interest in endodontics (root canals and other procedures focused on the health of the pulp inside the tooth) and has worked hard to become highly skilled in that area. "I like saving teeth better than replacing," he says simply. Root canals have an outsized reputation for being painful and frightening, partly because of misinformation that circulates online and in documentary form. Dr. Van Tuyl takes that head-on with patients: explaining what the procedure actually involves, debunking myths, and making sure people know that in most cases, a root canal relieves pain rather than causes it. The Evergreen office also offers a wide range of services including routine checkups and cleanings, fillings, cosmetic dentistry, and more, with the backing of Comfort Dental's broader network for cases that warrant a specialist referral. Why Does Saving a Natural Tooth Matter?
The reason dentists like Dr. Van Tuyl prioritize saving a tooth over simply pulling it is that it is almost always the better long-term outcome for a patient. Your natural teeth have roots that stimulate the jawbone, helping to maintain its density and structure over time. When a tooth is lost and not replaced, the bone in that area begins to resorb, which can subtly alter the shape of your face and affect the stability of neighboring teeth. A treated and restored tooth sidesteps all of that, keeping the surrounding structure intact. There's also a functional and financial argument for saving teeth. A natural tooth, even one that has had a root canal and a crown, typically outperforms even the best prosthetic options in terms of bite strength, sensation, and longevity. Implants are an excellent solution when extraction is unavoidable, but they require surgery, healing time, and a significantly higher upfront investment. Dr. Van Tuyl's preference for doing everything possible to save a tooth before considering replacement reflects a patient-centered mindset: what's least disruptive, most durable, and most cost-effective for the person sitting in the chair? In most cases, that answer is keeping what you already have. How Quickly Can You Get an Appointment?
One of the things Dr. Van Tuyl feels most strongly about is access. He finds it genuinely frustrating when practices make patients wait weeks or months for an appointment. "Our schedules run in such a way that we can get you in really quickly," he says. "I would not wanna be booked out six months for anything." That commitment to timely care is one of the reasons Comfort Dental Evergreen has earned the trust of patients throughout the foothills community. Whether you need an urgent appointment or just want to get back on a regular cleaning schedule, the team at 1232 Bergen Pkwy is ready to see you.
